[2025] In this performance, Alma Mahler is no longer ‘the wife of,’ but a headstrong, talented, and progressive woman. The Intercontinental Ensemble presents the chamber opera The Hidden Page about her life, featuring music by Alma and Gustav Mahler, Berg, Zemlinsky, and new works by Ernst Spyckerelle. It is a musical story about emancipation, feminism, loss, and legacy.
Thus, the opera is not only about Alma herself, but also about themes that are still relevant today. Alma deals with these topics in her own unique way, holding up a mirror to us. The leading role is performed by mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Levental, known for her theatrical expressiveness. Soprano Elisabeth Hetherington, winner of the Dutch Music Prize in 2024, takes on the role of her daughter, Manon Gropius.
